Slideshow: 5 Ways to Make Your Tax Season Easier

The year is almost over, but accountants still have a few weeks before tax season gets into full swing near the end of January. That means there’s still time to prepare and make the busy season just a little bit easier for you. We’ve worked with a lot of accountants over the years at eFileCabinet, and we asked a few of them what they recommended their fellow accountants and tax professionals do before tax season overwhelms you. Check out their answers in the slideshow below.

Tax Planning Meetings

This has benefits for both you and your clients. For your clients, it gives them a chance to go over documents with you to ensure they know everything they need; you can also run their numbers to give them a rough estimate of what they will owe when they file, so they can plan appropriately. For you, it’s a timesaver. You can catch any potential issues and get them all sorted out so each client’s return is a bit easier when it comes time to file.

Purging Old Files

You’re likely aware of those compliance laws set up by the SEC and FINRA. Many of them have to do with retention of documents—both how long you need to keep them, and when they’re supposed to be purged. Take the time now to get rid of those old, outdated documents before you get busy. Not only will it keep you compliant, but it’ll make it easier to find what you need while you’re doing tax returns in the coming months.

Take Time Off

The holiday season is the perfect time to take a few days away from the office so that you can relax and unwind. Even amid all your other preparations for tax season, it’s vital that you take time for yourself. If you don’t do it now, you’re bound to burn out before April 15th, and that’s something no accountant wants to face. Remember, you can't always run at full speed. Sometimes you need to slow down and take time for yourself so that you can be more effective when it matters most.

Hire an Intern

You’re going to have a lot to handle during tax season, from the returns themselves to last-minute changes on documents to meetings with clients. You shouldn’t be wasting any of your valuable time on menial tasks like data entry and scheduling appointments. Hire an intern for the busy season to handle those sorts of things for you. If you’re lucky, you may even be able to find an accounting student who needs to do an internship and can help with simple tax returns, saving you even more time.

Upgrade Your Software

You likely use some form of tax software and other computer software to keep your office efficient. Now is the time to make sure all of those programs and all your computer systems are up to date. You may also want to evaluate whether the software you’re currently using meets your needs. If not, then shop for a new software like eFileCabinet. With workflows, Zonal OCR, and the upcoming SideKick feature, our software will save you more time this tax season than you ever thought possible.
